As news of Jeffries' exclusionary and discriminatory hiring and marketing practices surfaced (including his refusal to make plus-sized women's clothing), employees came forward to shed light on the unexpected involvement of Jeffries' longtime romantic partner, Matthew Smith, at the company. Employees said Smith was constantly hanging around, despite not actuallybeing employed by Abercrombie & Fitch.
Sure, he was dating Jeffries, but how much—if any—influence did he have on the company's eventual fall from grace? Here's everything to know:
Who is Matthew Smith?
Matthew Smith was the longtime romantic partner of Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries. And while he wasn't an official employee of the retailer in any capacity, he was reportedly quite involved in what went on behind the scenes.
Smith graduated from Wharton at the University of Pennsylvania with an MBA in entrepreneurial management and was described by some colleagues as "a handsome, polished Brit," Buzzfeed Newsreported.
There was also a decent age gap between Smith and Jeffries. While Jeffries is currently 77, current estimates suggest that Smith is around 59 now. (Smith was 50 years old as of May 2013, according to public records that Buzzfeedfound).
