Cerebral, witty and determined? The Baltimore Ravens got that and more when picking Iowa State’s Charlie Kolar with the 128th overall pick in the fourth round of the NFL Draft.
At nearly 6-foot-7 and 252 pounds, the Cyclones’ highest-selected tight end caught 168 passes for 2,181 yards and 23 touchdowns. He did that during a four-season career in which he was the primary reason Iowa State tight end actually became a relevant position.
A two-time All-American, Kolar was Brock Purdy’s go-to target. He latched onto that role not only in the open field, but in the corner of the end zone, where he out-sized any defender attempting to cover him.

“I knew I just had to give Charlie a chance somewhere in the vicinity of where he was,” Purdy said during the season. “I can always trust a guy like that to go up and get it.”
Kolar just had a knack of getting open, wherever he found a space. He was cerebral.
That final point was proven last winter, when Kolar was presented the biggest individual award ever won by a Cyclones football player -— the prestigious Campbell Trophy, also known as college football’s Academic Heisman.
“Obviously, Charlie’s really intelligent,” Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said during an interview a couple years ago. “The background was that Kolar’s academics are outstanding and important.
“So, I remember just working really hard to say “hey, listen, we can live up to your standards academically. And oh by the way, we’ll do a great job of developing you as a football player, too.”
Kolar graduated in the fall of 2020 with a 3.99 cumulative grade-point average in mechanical engineering. Not realizing the deadline for an assignment had been moved up a couple days cost him from being a perfect 4.0.
"I didn’t see that," Kolar said about the revised deadline. “Spring ball was ending. I went out with my friends, turned in my assignment — and got an A-minus. I deserved it. I didn’t pay enough attention. It wasn’t like I failed an exam, or I missed something.
