Ron Jeremy, the former adult film star accused of multiple sex crimes in Los Angeles, was too incoherent to participate in a key hearing Thursday, which led the judge to suspend the case until a full mental health evaluation has been completed.

Stuart Goldfarb, Jeremy's lawyer, told Judge George Lomeli that his client, 69, did not recognize him and appeared confused when he tried to talk to him in his holding cell before the hearing.

He told the judge he had doubts about Jeremy's mental competency to assist in his own defense.

“I was just up in the cell where he was being kept, and I tried to get his attention unsuccessfully,” Goldfarb told the judge, according to Rolling Stone and City News Service.

“He was unable to determine who I was and wouldn’t accommodate both myself and the bailiff to fit into the wheelchair to come down here. I don’t think he should be forced to come down here under these circumstances.”

Goldfarb confirmed his remarks to USA TODAY.

Lomeli said the bailiff told the court that Jeremy was incoherent and not obeying commands. The judge then ordered Jeremy, whose full name is Ronald Jeremy Hyatt, to undergo psychiatric and neurological exams by doctors appointed by the county. In addition, Goldfarb will likely seek to have his client examined by doctors of his own choice.

Lomeli set an April 19 hearing to consider an update on Jeremy's condition, but it's possible the evaluation might take longer.

Jeremy, who has been in jail since he was arrested in the summer of 2020, has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

Jeremy's trial on more than 30 sex crimes dating back to 1996, was scheduled to begin in May; that appears unlikely now. The charges include rape, sexual battery and lewd act on a child, and involve 12 accusers.

In addition, prosecutors from the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office want to call multiple other accusers of uncharged alleged "prior bad acts" to testify that Jeremy assaulted them, too.
