Carbon is the basis of all life. Made of six electrons, it has the ability to bond with any number of other elements, creating a vast array of potential molecules, all of which make up our world and us.

"About a fifth of our bodies are made up of carbon," says Tamara Davis, an astrophysicist at the University of Queensland. "Most of the carbon that makes us and the Earth and all of the life around us comes from the inside of stars."

"Stars live by fusing elements in their core," says Davis. Familiar elements like hydrogen, helium, nitrogen and oxygen were all forged inside stars.
